Rationale: Acute non-diarrheal conditions like viral illnesses and heat-related illnesses may lead to fluid, electrolyte & energy (FEE) deficits due to reduced intake or increased losses including insensible losses. The impact of oral fluid, electrolytes & energy supplementation along with standard of care treatment on recovery in such conditions is yet to be evaluated.

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of adjuvant ORSL® Apple & ORSL® PLUS Orange Drink supplementation in the restoration of oral fluids, electrolytes & energy in subjects with acute common non-diarrheal illnesses with fever and/or general weakness who attended an out-patient department.

Methods: In this prospective, interventional, open-label, single arm, multicenter, naturalistic design study, subjects with fever and/or general weakness were given either ORSL® Apple or ORSL® PLUS Orange Drink as an adjuvant along with standard of care treatment as per physician’s discretion. Hydration & energy levels were evaluated at baseline, 20, 40, 60 minutes and 6, 24 & 48 hours after consumption of ORSL® variants through the new, modified “Aided Recovery Scale” Questionnaire.

Results: 617 subjects completed the study. A significant percentage of subjects reported improvement in either energy and/or hydration on the “Aided Recovery Scale” after 60 minutes, 6, 24 & 48 hours of ORSL® variants consumption. No product related adverse events were observed in the study.

Conclusion: ORSL® Apple & ORSL® PLUS Orange Drink are clinically effective to provide hydration and/or energy to patients with fever and/or general weakness.
