Rationale: Hospital malnutrition represents a global health problem. It is associated with increased complications, morbidity and mortality, hospital stay days, and costs. nutritionDay (nDay) is a project to fight against hospital malnutrition. It is an audit carried out simultaneously in all participating countries on a single day, using standard questionnaires that generate a national report. Aim: To identify the nutritional status of hospitalized patients older than 7 years and the characteristics of nutrient intake through the nDay data from an Ecuadorian hospital.
Methods: Descriptive analysis of the nDay 2019 data recollected in a teaching hospital of the Ecuadorian Austro. This study focused on the following variables: weight, height, nutritional status according to BMI, nutrition-related standards, and nutrition care strategy indicators. Data analysis was done by SPSS version 15.
Results: From 70 surveyed patients, mean age: 45 years, 42 (60%) were male, 16 (22.9%) had overweight, and 14 (20%) obesity. Characteristics of the nutritional support: only 27% had their caloric requirements determined and intake data recorded in their clinical history; 37% received parenteral nutrition; 60% were satisfied with the food delivered. The leading causes of lack of food intake were because they did not like it (10%) and poor appetite (7%).
Conclusion: In this study, excess malnutrition was the most prevalent. The caloric requirements were only calculated approximately in the sample's fourth part. These results highlight the importance of improving hospitalized patients' nutritional screening and treatment.
