Rationale: Esophageal-gastric reflux, aspiration, and diarrhea are important complications of enteral nutrition related with digestive function. To prevent these complications, we administered liquid enteral formula with controlled viscosity, “MeiflowTM”.

Methods: Nineteen patients with PEG and 2 patients with nasogastric tube underwent enteral nutrition in Hibino Hospital. We measured the time for inserting “MeiflowTM” and the practical time of nurses. The intra-gastric characteristic of “MeiflowTM” was recognized by the experiment with rats.

Results: The inserting time of 300kcal (167mL) of “MeiflowTM” through PEG by natural dropping method was from 20 to 30 minutes, and the case of 400kcal (223mL) was from 25 to 30 minutes. In the cases of nasal tube, it took 2 hours with stable speed. The intra-gastric characteristic of “MeiflowTM” was almost same as solid food in the experiment with rats.

Conclusion:  In a survey that was carried out by PDN (PEG doctors network) for doctors involved in home care, 69% of 254 respondents answered that they had experiences of using semisolid nutrients to prevent gastro-esophageal reflux, nausea, and diarrhea, and to reduce feeding time. Liquid enteral formula with controlled viscosity (semisolid) is thought to. In Japan, products with high viscosity more than 5,000 m Pa · s formulas are mainly used for the purpose of facilitating excreting movement of the stomach. It is so hard to inject it that we use a compressing bag or hand maneuver of nurses. But it takes a high cost for compressing bags and much practical time of nurses during injection. On the other hand, use of “MeiflowTM” , whose viscosity is 400 mPa・s, needs no special equipment and only short time for practical time of nurses at start and end of feeding. So “MeiflowTM” is more useful for enteral nutrition than conventional formulas.
